Renowned for her energetic brushwork, rich colour palette, and fluid compositions, Cecily Brown presents a new body of work shaped by the landscape of Kensington Gardens, home to the Serpentine Gallery. The setting holds personal meaning for the artist and informs the exhibition’s visual language.
Nature and park life have long influenced Brown’s practice. In this exhibition, she continues to explore these themes through shifting scales, layered colour, and recurring imagery ranging from intimate couples to wooded environments and subtly disquieting scenes drawn from imagined walks in nature.
The presentation brings together newly created paintings alongside key works dating back to 2001, as well as recent monotypes and drawings. These works reflect Brown’s early experiences of the English landscape, her interest in illustrated children’s books, and the nuanced tension often found in traditional cautionary narratives.
Picture Making marks Brown’s first major solo exhibition of paintings in a UK institution since her 2005 show at Modern Art Oxford. It also signals a significant return for the artist, who has been based in New York City for over three decades.
