Rashid Johnson Photographs Jay-Z for GQ’s Global Issue Celebrating Reasonable Doubt at 30

American contemporary artist Rashid Johnson has photographed hip-hop icon Jay-Z for the new global issue of GQ, released on March 24. The feature accompanies a major interview with the musician and art collector and marks the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt.

The photoshoot presents Jay-Z in a series of composed and introspective portraits that emphasize his enduring cultural and intellectual presence. Johnson approached the project with a clear conceptual framework. He referenced the observational portraiture of James Van Der Zee and the psychologically charged visual language of Francis Bacon. This combination results in images that balance realism with subtle distortion and emotional depth. In one of the most notable photographs, Jay-Z partially covers his face with a mask while maintaining direct eye contact with the viewer.
