Curated by art historian Robert Lubar Messeri, the exhibition delves into Miró’s creative journey from 1924 to 1981. Featuring 74 extraordinary works from the Portuguese State Contemporary Art Collection, the exhibition highlights Miró’s mastery of various techniques, including painting, sculpture, and mixed media.
A Turkish First
This exhibition marks a significant moment in Turkish art history, as it presents several works for the first time in the country. The renowned Sobreteixims series, which bridges the gap between painting and textile, and the thought-provoking Burnt Canvases, which challenge the traditional boundaries of art, are among the highlights of this groundbreaking exhibition.
A Collaborative Effort
Arkas Holding Chairman Lucien Arkas expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating, “This is our 27th exhibition at Arkas Art Center since 2011. We’re honored to bring Miró’s groundbreaking work to Izmir. This exhibition is one of the most comprehensive Miró exhibitions ever organized in Turkey. It includes works that have never been exhibited here before, such as the Sobreteixims and Burnt Canvases series.”
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay praised Arkas Art Center’s commitment to enriching the city’s cultural landscape. He emphasized the importance of such exhibitions in inspiring future generations of artists.
Porto Mayor Rui Moreira highlighted the collaborative efforts between public and private sectors in promoting art and culture. He shared the story of how the Serralves Foundation was established and how the Miró collection was preserved during a financial crisis.
Philippe Vergne, Director of the Serralves Museum, expressed his gratitude to Arkas Art Center for making this exhibition possible. He emphasized the significance of sharing Miró’s artistic legacy with a new audience in Turkey.
