Amos Rex offers unique and surprising experiences through exhibitions of new, often experimental, contemporary art. Located in the heart of Helsinki, the museum brings together international contemporary art, innovative artistic practices and immersive experiences within a distinctive architectural setting.

The museum has hosted exhibitions by internationally acclaimed artists and collectives including teamLab, Studio Drift, Bill Viola, Ryoji Ikeda and Larissa Sansour. Every three years, Amos Rex also presents Generation, an exhibition series dedicated to emerging artists between the ages of 15 and 23, providing a platform for a new generation of creative voices.

The museum entrance and shop are located in Lasipalatsi (“Glass Palace”), a landmark of Finnish modernism from the 1930s. Designed as a multifunctional complex, Lasipalatsi brought restaurants, cafés, shops and the Bio Rex cinema together under one roof, reflecting an innovative approach to urban life at the time.

The museum’s subterranean exhibition spaces were designed by JKMM Architects and opened to the public in 2018. One of the most distinctive features of Amos Rex is its unusual architectural relationship with the surrounding urban landscape. The curved forms of the gallery roof rise through the ground to create a playful public courtyard that has become a landmark in Helsinki. Skylights integrated into the courtyard offer unexpected views of architectural details, including the museum’s chimney and stairways that appear to lead nowhere.

Amos Rex’s exhibition programme focuses primarily on international contemporary art, presenting a diverse range of artistic practices and multidisciplinary projects. The museum explores a wide variety of media, including painting and drawing, sculpture, video and media art, light and technology-based works, large-scale installations and site-specific projects created in response to the museum’s unique architecture and exhibition spaces.

The museum is also known for its interactive and participatory exhibitions, encouraging visitors to engage directly with artworks and their surroundings. Rather than simply observing art, visitors are often invited to move through, experience and interact with the works themselves.

Through its combination of experimental contemporary art, innovative architecture and immersive experiences, Amos Rex creates a dynamic dialogue between art, space and the public.
